Walkable Smoky Mountain Adventures at Basecamp
There’s something special about Townsend, often called the “peaceful side of the Smokies.” It’s where family trips slow down just enough to actually enjoy them.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly Smoky Mountains itinerary that doesn’t involve constant driving or packed schedules, this 3-day family itinerary is centered around staying at Little Arrow’s newest, Basecamp RV PARK, built around exactly that. With so many things to do in Townsend, TN, with kids just a mile or less away, you can park once and settle into a more relaxed rhythm.
Think river floats, easy hikes, walkable meals, and evenings around the fire—simple, memorable, and easy to pull off.

Day 1: Arrival & Settling Into Camp Life
Arrive at Basecamp, unpack, and take a deep breath. You’re officially in mountain time now!
For dinner, take a short walk over to Peaceful Side Social. It’s the kind of place where everyone finds a favorite. Local tip: The truffle fries are a must, and the sourdough-crust clay-oven pizzas are truly next-level!
Peaceful Side also has the most gorgeous naturescape playground with something for kids of all ages to climb, balance, & exercise their imaginations. It’s simple in the best way.
After some play, cool off right there at the peaceful Side creamery, featuring unique signature and seasonal flavors (they even often offer dairy-free & gluten-free options!)
End the night with a relaxing evening in the hot tub while kiddos play in the pool before heading back to your site for stories around a cozy campfire.

Day 2: River Days & Classic Townsend Stops
Start the day slow! coffee in hand, fresh air all around.
Make your way to River Rat Tubing (just a mile up the road) for a morning float. It’s an easygoing adventure that feels like summer at its best: cool water, sunshine, and just enough splash to keep things fun for everyone. Local tip: book online to guarantee your spot & book 2+ days ahead of time to save a little money.
If you don’t quite feel like venturing out, you can also bring your own river tubes & launch right at Basecamp at our private river access point or just up the road at the popular Townsend Wye!
Afterward, head over to Burger Master, located just a few steps from Basecamp, for a laid-back bite. Think classic burgers, crispy fries, and milkshakes that feel like a treat in the middle of the day.
In the afternoon, explore the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Just across from basecamp. With plenty of space to roam and interactive exhibits, it’s a great way to connect with the history and culture of the Smokies without feeling like a typical “museum stop.”
Spend the rest of the day back at Basecamp, resting in a hammock, enjoying the private river access, or just letting the kids lead the way.

Day 3: A Smoky Mountain Morning
Ease into your last day with a trip into the park for a hike along Middle Prong Trail. The trail is wide and family-friendly, with the river running alongside you most of the way. Go as far as you’d like: this one is more about the experience than the distance. Local tip: Head to the Townsend visitors center on your way into town to purchase parking passes the day before if you plan to hike early!
On your way back, stop by the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. It’s a meaningful way to wrap up the trip, offering a deeper connection to the land through hands-on learning and exploration. Here, you can also pick up a Junior Ranger activity booklet. Once it’s completed, bring it to any ranger to be sworn in as a Junior Ranger and receive a badge, a meaningful keepsake to help remember your time in the Smokies.
Head back to Basecamp to pack up, but take your time.
Let the kids play one more round at our nature-inspired playground. Sit a little longer. Soak it all in. Local tip: swing by the Foothills Parkway on your way out of the Smokies to soak in some final stunning Smoky Mountain views.
The Magic of Staying Close
One of the best parts of this itinerary is how little you need to drive. With so much within a mile or less, you can spend more time being present and less time getting from place to place. Basecamp RV park places you right in the middle of Townsend on the greenbelt! Park your RV, van, tent, pop-up, or even rent an RV through RV share and wander your way.
It’s not about packing the schedule: it’s about enjoying where you are.
And somehow, between the river, the trails, the campfire nights, and the simple joy of being together, it all adds up to something that feels a lot like the best parts of childhood.
